Grief Counseling in NYC

Grief can be a difficult experience, but you don’t have to go through it alone.

The loss of a loved one, pet, job, or the end of a relationship can bring up intense and powerful emotions. Sometimes these emotions are so overwhelming that it is hard to imagine life without them.

While we usually associate grief with the loss of a loved one, it’s important to recognize that grief can follow all sorts of losses: job loss, break-ups, and any other major life transition.
Bereavement counseling can help you make sense of your feelings, no matter which type of loss you’re going through.

Understanding loss & the grieving process

While each person and situation is unique, grief and loss are also universal human experiences. Learning more about grief and loss can help you better understand your own emotions and what you’re going through.

Our approach to grief counseling in NYC

After experiencing a loss, you might feel broken. However, we’re here to remind you that you have an innate ability to feel whole–and nothing, not even grief and loss, can ever take that from you.

You do not need to be “fixed.” After all, nothing can fill the place of who or what you lost. That’s not the goal of bereavement counseling.

Grief is different for everyone. The people you normally turn to for support in an emotional situation are often grieving the same loss. And when you’re going through grief, it can often feel like no one understands what you’re going through—like your friends and family mean well, but they just don’t get it.

That’s why it can be beneficial to talk to a therapist. We aren’t experiencing the loss with you, so we can offer outside perspective and help you navigate the complicated feelings that come with grief.

We’re here for you when you need us. We can’t bring back your loved one, or change what happened to cause your loss. But we can help you to honor the past, adapt to the present, and refine the future.

Five stages of grief

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross pioneered the theory of the five stages of grief which are:

  1. Denial
  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptance

These stages can serve as a general guideline, it’s important to remember that they are not always linear and that you may return to certain stages throughout your grieving process.

When grieving, it’s essential to be patient with yourself and understand that progress is not always straightforward.
